European football is in turmoil these days. Football fans are angry, confused and upset... Why? Because 12 of Europe's most ambitious clubs have decided to create their own league. Most fans were of the opinion that such a formation would harm football. This new organization, which would be called the European Super League, would consist of 20 clubs, 15 of which would be founders. So how was this league going to be? Even though this formation was canceled after a while... Which teams would take part? What did the commentators say? Let's analyze it all together...
Highlights
Six teams from the English Premier League, three from Spain's La Liga and three from Italy's Serie A became founders.
At least 3 more clubs would join the founding clubs.
The President of the European Super League would be Florentino Perez, who was also the President of Real Madrid.
What would happen?
It started to get really messy, but then it went back to the way it was. For a while we really thought: "Is football as we know it completely changing?" The European Super League shocked sports fans all over the world. So if this organization existed, which teams would take part? The European Super League would consist of 20 clubs, 15 of which would be founding members. The teams were as follows.
From the English Premier League: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham
Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid from Spain's La Liga;
Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus from Italian Serie A.
Of course, when you see these teams, it's hard not to wonder what it would be like if they played each other every week! But how this would affect the culture of football is also debatable.
At least 3 more clubs were expected to join these founding clubs. The league was scheduled to start in August. What can I say, it's a great achievement to plan and hide it for so many months...
The President of the European Super League would be Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid. According to the president of Real Madrid, this formation would help soccer to reach its rightful place...
There are plans to establish a league for women's football clubs as soon as possible.
The clubs would be divided into 2 groups of 10 and the top 3 finishers would advance directly to the quarterfinals.
Minuses
This new formation came as a shock to all of us. Honestly, when I learned about this news, I thought: This formation would damage the culture and understanding of soccer. There was also the danger of players and teams being banned from local and national tournaments. This would cause another problem. I also thought that the small budget teams in the leagues they are currently in would be in great danger.
Who Said What?
UK president Boris Johnson immediately took matters into his own hands and showed his dissatisfaction on social media.
“The European Super League plan would cause great damage to football and we support the football authorities to take action against it... The clubs concerned should make a statement to their fans and the football community before taking any new steps on this issue“
As for FIFA, they obviously didn't even want to hear about it... They made it clear that they would not recognize the league and that they would not let the players play for their national teams.
Most football fans said we should never accept this formation. There were even some who said to stop supporting the teams in this group.
Other 3 Teams
The other 3 teams were expected to be French Champions PSG and Germany's Bayern Munich.
48 Hours Later
Forty-eight hours after the news of this formation, 6 English clubs announced their decision to withdraw after intense reactions from UEFA, FIFA, country federations and fans. Supporters of the "European Super League" were forced to resign from their positions in the English Premier League. Ed Woodward, Vice Chairman of Manchester United, and Tom Werner, Chairman of Liverpool, have resigned as Premier League Advertising Advisors. Manchester City's Chief Executive Ferran Soriano and Arsenal's Chief Executive Vinai Venkatesham have left the Premier League Advisory Group, while Chelsea's Chairman Bruce Buck will not continue in his role in the league's audit and service unit.
Review Result
At the end of the day, it's a business but it would be a big problem for the small clubs. The money flow would completely go to this new league. The big teams joining the new league would not be able to play in their current league and this would create a big problem for the smaller teams in that league.
If this formation had come to fruition - and it could have, given the financial power of the clubs and the players in the teams - could this new formation have become the NBA of football? Could such a formation come up again? We will see together ...
